Peptide purity percentages explained

What a purity figure such as 98% or 99% means, how it is measured and why it should always be read with its method.

What the number means

A purity percentage typically states the proportion of the detected signal that belongs to the target compound, usually measured by HPLC at a specified wavelength.

What it does not mean

Purity by HPLC is not the same as net peptide content. A sample can show high chromatographic purity while also containing water or counter-ions, which other tests measure.

Comparing figures

Figures from different laboratories or methods are not always directly comparable. Check the method, column and detection settings stated on each report.
