Laboratory record keeping and inventory management
Simple practices for tracking research materials in a laboratory: labelling, logs, batch records and stock rotation.
Labelling
Every container should be clearly labelled with the compound name, batch number, date received and any date opened. Keep original supplier labels intact.
Inventory logs
Maintain a log of receipts, usage and disposal by batch. Digital spreadsheets or laboratory information management systems both work if kept up to date.
Stock rotation
Use older batches first (first in, first out) and review stock regularly so materials are not held beyond the period stated by the supplier.
